DuPont and John Sebastian present a revolutionary kitchen concept using DuPont™ Corian® and DuPont™ Zodiaq®
At the Stockholm Furniture Fair 2009, DuPont is proud to present Haptech, an innovative kitchen concept from the Danish star designer John Sebastian. This kitchen challenges conventional forms and explores the functional and aesthetic properties of the high-performance materials DuPont™ Corian® and DuPont™ Zodiaq®.
– For the creation of Haptech, I investigated how people relate to kitchens and orientate themselves in them. The need to create sense and meaning in our surroundings leads to reflection on how one behaves in different rooms, and I wanted this kitchen to be in line with human behaviour. At the same time, Haptech is technically advanced and its form and configuration challenge traditional kitchen norms. My ambition was to make use of both technical and socially oriented solutions to present a kitchen with a more human and attractive appearance that melds with a room in a natural way, explains John Sebastian.
Three important functions are spread across Haptech. First and foremost is the preparation of food and dishwashing. These are accompanied by storage facilities and then the function for eating, where one can sit and eat. The storage cupboards, cooker, refrigerator and freezer are positioned against the wall behind the island.
DuPont™ Corian® has been available for over 40 years and has been used by many well-known international architects and designers thanks to its durability, adaptable nature and soft aesthetics.
Its design flexibility in particular made it possible to realise John Sebastian’s ideas regarding the form of the main body of Haptech. The work surface is manufactured from DuPont™ Zodiaq®, which provides an interesting contrast. The DuPont™ Zodiaq® material is presented in public for the very first time in Sweden at this year’s furniture fair. It is a high-performance, decorative surface material that combines the strength, beauty and rawness of natural quartz with a superior smoothness in its structure and tone.
– The characteristic soft, white and sensual surface of DuPont™ Corian® is the perfect match for the cool, black and smooth DuPont™ Zodiaq® worktops, comments John Sebastian.

New playful collection by John Sebastian
At Stockholm Furniture Fair 2014, the Danish award winning designer John Sebastian launches Nota, a new collection in DuPont™ Corian® expressing a relatable and playful look, with its simple geometric shapes and quirky graphic details.
Driven by an honest design language using low-tech construction methods, John Sebastian has uniting the valuable relationships between excellent craftsmanship and the combination of contrasting materials. The designer particularly appreciates the effect of the uncompromising contrast between warm nature materials such as oak combined with the silken sophisticated high-tech material DuPont™ Corian®.
”I wanted to make a range of recognisable products with an immediate appeal, by using simple geometric shapes to highlight the aesthetics and beauty of DuPont™ Corian®“, says John Sebastian.
The sympathetic aesthetics show a completely new side of John Sebastian, who has designed strong iconic shapes for multinational brands including Audi, Georg Jensen and Sony electronics.
“The spirit of changing, growing, learning and improving as an essential part of the design philosophy of John Sebastian is one of the reasons for our long-term relationship. To keep developing and offering new and improved solutions simply is at the core of DuPont™ Corian®, which is what we want to demonstrate with the Endless Evolution Initiative“, says Christian Ekwall, Business Director for the DuPont Building Innovations in the Scandinavian and Baltic regions.

The design idea behind the “Verve” chair
Within some projects I developed in the recent past, I discovered the unique design versatility, the formability and the visual lightness of DuPont™ Corian®, an advanced material made by DuPont company combining properties of both metals and advanced resins. For this project, I wanted to explore and expand the tactility, the sensoriality of DuPont™ Corian® by creating a seating solution that would accommodate the current needs and behaviour of people, while balancing art, aesthetics and science.
After reconsidering the relationship between humans and the objects upon which we sit – distilling down to the essential substance of a chair – I developed a new silhouette that challenges both the way a chair should look and how it should be used. Distinguished by three supporting stands, the unique shape offers the user more flexibility, inviting new and different sitting experiences. Driven by functionality, the “Verve” chair is shaped to give maximum ergonomic support, providing a smooth transition between user and the object.
thick, sheet of DuPont™ Corian®, which provides the almost self-sustaining structure of the chair. The chair is stackable and can be made using different colours of DuPont™ Corian®.
"I first met John Sebastian, when we approached him for our “DuPont™ Corian®: 40 Years - 40 Designers” event at 2007 Milan week of design. He had never worked with Corian® before, he immediately accepted the challenge and designed one of the most elegant and original pieces of the whole exhibition: a light, gently-shaped, black and white fruit holster, alternating stripes of DuPont™ Corian® with void spaces.
Since then, John Sebastian has been thinking extensively on DuPont™ Corian® and the solutions it could provide in furnishing. Recently we challenged him again, proposing him to think about DuPont™ Corian® for a chair, which is not an easy application. The design he developed – the Verve chair, made with a single sheet of DuPont™ Corian® - perfectly captures the versatility, the formability and the sensorial beauty of DuPont™ Corian®. The Verve chair is a truly remarkable Danish design...durable materials simply crave durable design...." says Helle Jensen, DuPont™ Corian®, country manager, Denmark.
